Destroying the Village to Save It

Our Left loves our country. Or at least the country they want to create.

I actually have little doubt that they truly believe their views on the war are best for the country:

To leading Democrats such as Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, Al Gore and John Edwards, America would be better off if she lost. And this has been true from the start.

Read the whole thing.

What I have trouble handling is that they can actually believe defeat in Iraq is for the best.

During the Kosovo campaign, a war I thought should be the responsibility of the Europeans if they were so upset, and not our problem, I never wanted anything but our victory in that fight. It never occurred to me that I should advocate our military's defeat just because I opposed the reason for war.

How is it possible for Americans to think that the defeat of America is good for America?

That perhaps, is exactly the right question to ask. Citizens of the world who have moved beyond narrow patriotism can think America's defeat will improve the world, including America.

Even from that point of view, our defeat would be bad for the world. But I don't care to even move beyond the frame of reference of judging the war based on American interests.

But then, I would do that. I'm an American.
