I'm no expert on French domestic politics. And I freely admit I lack a proper appreciation of nuance. But France seems to have a huge problem that it studiously ignores.
Ah, those sophisticated French and their New Year's Eve traditions to welcome the birth of 2025:
Despite nearly 1,000 cars being set ablaze, hundreds of thousands of people in France welcomed the New Year with largely peaceful celebrations, according to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau.
Retailleau announced late on Wednesday that 984 cars went up in flames across the country. Some 420 people were arrested, 310 of whom were taken into police custody.
It's largely peaceful! Barely literally fiery at all!
Pay no attention to those people of unknown origin and belief setting cars ablaze in the suburbs! All is well in central Paris! The threat is nowhere near the the Champs-Élysées!
Details on the likely culprits are revealingly sparse in that article about the mysterious motivation of the people setting cars ablaze. But we do know they sure do hate the cars!
