Georgia Not On Our Mind

America stymied Russia's attempt to recapture Georgia in 2008, which it lost in the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia has been patiently working to reverse that defeat and complete the conquest with internal allies rather than military invasion. Is the West going to let Russia succeed without doing anything?

Georgia is sliding back into Russia's orbit

There is now little doubt that the October election was fraudulent. Yet the response of Western governments has been strangely muted. ...

The reasons for Georgia’s authoritarian turn have a lot to do with domestic politics—and specifically the rise of Georgian Dream, a vehicle for the political ambitions of the billionaire Ivanishvili, who made his fortune in Russia. Since it came to power in 2012, Georgian Dream has slowly but steadily pursued a course toward authoritarian rule that now appears on the verge of culmination. Yet the West, once so eager to champion Georgia’s struggling democracy, has retreated into passivity.

Russia practiced its invasion before the well-telegraphed invasion. And we are blowing our under-appreciated efforts during Russia's 2008 invasion to keep Russia out.
