On Friday, China said Taiwan would only get burnt if it sought to rely on foreigners, adding to the warnings from state media about the risk of war.
The problem is that the Taiwanese think of the Chinese as foreigners. Dictatorial foreigners. Dictatorial foreigners with a large military and ruthless leaders who would crush freedom and democracy on Taiwan if given the chance.
In unrelated news:
Separately, China said defense spending for 2018 would rise 8.1 percent compared with the previous year, a number that will likely add to Taiwan’s concern about Chinese intentions amid a stepped up Chinese military presence near the island.
But the Chinese have a point about Taiwan not relying on foreigners.
As I've said before, Taiwan needs a sense of urgency on increasing their dangerously low defense spending.
Because just hanging on to survive a Chinese invasion isn't enough. Taiwan has to drive the invaders into the sea unless Taiwan just wants to delay defeat.
