Army-Navy Game: Renew old rivalry in new venue

What is it?

One of the most storied rivalries in all of college sports will be on display for the 112th time when Army & Navy renew acquaintances Dec. 10, at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., for the annual Army-Navy football game. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. and kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the CBS television network and the radio over the Westwood One network. The game will also be aired world-wide on the Armed Forces Network.

What is the Army doing?

At the high profile game, the Army will highlight to prospective officer candidates and other key audiences its state-of-the-art, high-tech leadership opportunities. The Army has diverse talents, leadership preparation and cutting-edge technologies, which combine to create officer-leaders prepared to defeat complex threats and protect Soldiers across the spectrum of operations.

A wide variety of Army equipment and technologies will be on display outside the stadium before the game. Game-goers can see up close such things as the latest Stryker combat vehicle, the Buffalo mine-protected clearance vehicle, and the latest M-ATV (mine-resistant, ambush-protected, all-terrain vehicle). Attendees will also have hands-on opportunities to touch the equipment that protects Soldiers in battle such as armor and helmets, as well as night vision goggles, thermal sights and several weapon systems. All showcase the technological edge todays Soldiers have over their adversaries.

Why is this important to the Army?

Connecting with the public and continuously maintaining and strengthening goodwill is vital to the Armys success, and the Army-Navy game is a great platform for doing so. West Points mission is to educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of duty, honor, country, and prepared for a career of professional excellence as service to the nation as an officer in the U.S. Army. As General George C. Marshall, Army Chief of Staff during World War II once said, I want an officer for a secret and dangerous mission. I want a West Point football player.

While on the field the players from West Point and Annapolis will fight one another with every ounce of their being, but when all is said and done, they will combine to form one of the most powerful fighting forces the world has ever known. In the very near future, every cadet and midshipman will be commissioned to serve in the defense of our nation.

Whats the way forward?
