The Eastern Question is up for grabs. What will the alliance structure look like in the eastern Mediterranean Sea?
Greece is moving beyond NATO to secure itself from Turkish power:
Greece announced Monday it has completed the work on an undersea power cable link connecting the mainland to the island of Crete, a key step in its ambitious plan for a wider expansion of the grid in the Eastern Mediterranean that will eventually include Cyprus and Israel. The European Union is funding it to diversify energy imports away from Russia. But I see this as Greece and Cyprus providing a Plan B in the eastern Mediterranean to replace America's Incirlik air base should Turkey continue to move away from NATO and pursue Ottoman glories.
Israel gets an ally against the increasingly Islamist Turkey under Erdogan. The days when secular Turkey was an ally of Israel are gone.
Where is Turkey heading? Does the lack of a land frontier with Russia give Turkey the space to ally with historic enemy Russia rather than need NATO to hold off Russia/USSR?
