Man-Made and Nature-Destroyed?

China's construction of islands in the South China Sea to deploy military forces to stake out their claims in the region is impressive, but since these islands are made of sand dumped on barely surfaced rocks and reefs, would these artificial islands be scraped away in a big storm?
