I don't buy it. Just like the Canadians are generally against the Afghan campaign because it is the only war they are in, if the anti-Iraq War people here didn't have an Iraq War to be against, they'd be against Afghanistan. Bank on it.
Japan, too, isn't involved in anything but the Afghan campaign right now. Although the new Japanese prime minister favors the mission, he promised to compromise with the anti-war elements. So Japan may scale back their mission:
A new draft law, submitted to the opposition Friday, would clearly limit the mission to naval refueling and supplying of water to vessels participating in the U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom's maritime patrol missions in the Indian Ocean.
"Under the new law, there will be no refueling to ships providing support for ground operations (in Afghanistan)," Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said Sunday on a public broadcaster NHK talk show.
But why cut off the "good war?"
The Democrats are critical of the mission because they say the U.S.-led Afghan campaign has not been properly sanctioned by the United Nations. They also say the mission violates the pacifist constitution.
Funny, but by this criteria, Iraq is superior since the UN annually approves our mission in Iraq.
So just remember, when Afghanistan is the only war in town, the local Left will oppose it. It is only the good war when you need to oppose a bigger war and need to pretend you are tough and committed to defending America.
