America--through NATO--is why Europe has had its fleeting moment of actual freedom since World War II. It's been a nice run. But while it is understandable that so many on the continent are peddling the outrageous take that America is rejecting freedom while Europe is saving it, it is deeply disappointing that "thought leaders" in Britain are so deluded.
"Europe is the actual land of the free now"
WTAF? Are those people that stupid? Is the reason for Brexit forgotten? The only part of the Statue of Liberty fleeing (figuratively) to Europe is the crappy poem welcoming unwashed masses:
On this day when we celebrate the founding of a democratic republic based on individual freedom and rule of law, let's not forget that the statue given to America by France is the Statue of Liberty and not the Statue of Unrestricted Immigration, notwithstanding the later-added poem.FFS, are that many throne-sniffing Europeans unaware that they are the baddies on liberty? They're on the cusp of 1848 Version 2.0 as the rulers repress and silence their people even more for being upset that they are being repressed and demonized.
But don't underestimate the ability of the proto-empire in Europe to suppress freedom. And my visual take on Europe's relationship with Lady Liberty in that post on suppressing freedom is far more accurate than what The Economist vomited up at the top:
