This one sees tons of parallels between the Soviet Union's war and our war:
The only real difference between the Kremlin documents and the contemporary U.S. policy debate is that we know how the first debacle ended.
Good grief. The writer sees eerie similarities in the geography and people. Really. Two different wars in the same place not separated by much time, and it is a shock that Afghans act similarly, with similar problems, and Pakistan is still across the border. Wow. Spooky, huh? And since the former Soviet dictator Gorbachev thinks we are doomed, we should withdraw.
This author turns the dial up from the Vietnam comparison idiocy our Left usually favors that sees similarities that any two wars would share all the way to the proverbial "11" of stupidity.
Yeah, never mind that the Soviets attempted to exterminate their way to victory in Afghanistan and we curtail our firepower so much that the clear majority of civilian casualties are caused by the Taliban. Never mind that we remain far more popular, and never mind our motives for fighting are far more justified than Moscow's brazen attempt at conquest.
But this author thinks we're supposed to take Gorbachev's advice and run away. I'm guessing she has always been eager to run away.
Lord save us from idiots and inept communists. And yes, save us in that order.
UPDATE: Oops. I fixed the quote to one that actually addresses my point. The perils of fast cutting and pasting...
