Well, even if the desire for fiscal discipline leads the new Congress to cut defense spending, I think we can at least be assured that the departure of Representative Pelosi as Speaker of the House means that there will be no congressional effort to defund the Afghanistan war effort in 2011 or 2012 to compel a premature withdrawal at a too hasty pace.

General Petraeus has some breathing room.
