If we don't help allies stop enemies overseas, we'll be nearly alone if we have to fight them over here.
Geopolitical Futures addresses America's enduring interest in keeping Europe friendly:
The U.S. has gone to war – or near to war – three times with European powers that had sought to take control of the Continent. ...
This defined the U.S. strategy. The United States was safe from land invasion – neither Canada nor Mexico was a threat – so the only possible avenue for invasion was the sea. So in addition to the threat to its trade, the U.S. was concerned that another power would take control of the Atlantic and stage an amphibious assault. ...
And it must be remembered that the U.S. still needs trade – and trade with Europe is most important. Keeping naval lines open was the key to U.S. wars in the 20th century. This remains the case now and will continue to do so in the future.
I've described the threats to America across the Atlantic that makes supporting NATO in our interest.
And I placed it in context of secure borders at home that free up power to deploy abroad; and the general forward defense strategy in the Pacific and Atlantic.
We aren't policing the world. Or even trying to "run the world". We're trying to keep an enemy from organizing the resources available abroad into a force capable of projecting power to the New World.
Where we are.
We will regret it if we walk away from stopping enemies when we have allies to stop them.
