Cold War

The Arctic is opening up as a region for competition among a number of states seeking claims to the regions's resources and use the navigable waters:

Countries around the Arctic Ocean -- the United States, Russia, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Iceland -- are rushing to stake out the Polar Basin's seabed, fishing rights and maritime routes.

When global warming alarmists warned that nations would compete for resources, I thought they meant depleting resources--not new ones. Go figure.

Fortunately, apart from Russia, the competitors are all friends and allies.

Eventually, I think Russia will be incorporated into the West as Germany, Eastern Europe, Japan and South Korea have been since World War II.

But amidst all the fake threats that Russia claims come from the West, this dispute could put off the day of reconciliation.

Or maybe an agreement to parcel out the resources will hasten the day.

This Cold War will likely be one fought mostly with lawyers and diplomats, I suspect.
