Afghanistan's security situation has worsened since NATO formally ended combat operations in 2014, as Taliban insurgents battle to reimpose strict Islamic law following their overthrow in 2001 at the hands of U.S.-led troops.
Note that NATO--that is, America--unilaterally declared an end to combat operations. But combat operations did not end as the Taliban continued to battle government forces.
I was certainly worried about backing off in Afghanistan too soon.
Which reinforces my argument that we cannot unilaterally declare peace in Afghanistan to "end" our longest war and expect peace to come to the region when the Taliban still seek to take control of that territory where they will once again allow jihadis to have sanctuary to strike America.
