Next month, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, prompting Desert Shield to protect Saudi Arabia and then Desert Storm to eject his troops from Kuwait. Here's my ten-year retrospective that was intended for a Military Review contest that was unofficially canceled between editors.
That was "my" war (although I was in the IRR by the time of Bosnia, so could have been called up for that, too). My National Guard signal unit was alerted to go to war, but then we were dropped from the mobilization list so didn't go.
I still get a medal for it. Heck of a job I did back in the states, apparently!
It's kind of shocking that this took place 25 years ago. It's history rather than current events.
