Character Witness

Iraq's Sunni Arabs who are skirting the line between protest and uprising do themselves no good by attracting the support of a fugitive Saddam henchman:

The most senior member of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's entourage still at large has urged Sunni Muslim anti-government protesters to stand their ground until Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is toppled.

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri heads Saddam's Baath party, which was banned after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 that overthrew the Sunni strongman and empowered majority Shi'ite Muslims.

Iraq's Sunni Arabs couldn't beat the Iraqi government when the security forces were green and still forming. Even without US troops today, the Iraqi government would defeat a new uprising--and likely be more ruthless without our restraining hand.

If Iraq's Sunnis keep this up and crosses the line to revolt, emboldened by the Sunni successes in Syria, Iraq will just expel their own Sunni Arabs to enjoy their new homeland.
