I keep hearing politicians boast that they've cut tons of money from our spending. But our deficit continues to be in the trillion dollar range. Clearly, nobody is cutting anything at all, in the real world.
But math will catch up with us, just as it is catching up with Greece:
Based on gross domestic product, resources and work ethic, America isn't as deeply in debt as Greece. However, America's own structural debt is the biggest strategic threat the U.S. faces. It is already eroding America's military power. Soft power advocates had better pay attention. The debt is also eroding America's economic, diplomatic and cultural power to influence and persuade.
But perhaps I misunderstand our left. Perhaps they don't like the idea of America having any type of power at all. Perhaps we're to rely on the kindness of strangers for our security and prosperity.
That will work out just swell.
