So China really doesn't approve of the precedent Putin is trying to set in Ukraine by tearing away a part of that country?

No doubt that makes sense:

And just what does China think of Russia encouraging separatism in a UN state? You'd think there would be room for smart diplomacy there.

You'd think we might be able to forge some common ground on Ukraine with China.

If we had smart diplomacy, of course.
