I don't want a new Cold War with Russia. But "reset" is dead. Just go about our security relationships without letting Russia hold a veto over our actions.
I don't think we need to dignify Russian power with a new Cold War that focuses our attention on containing Russia. The Russians would probably like that. Their egos are fragile enough and would love the boost--and proof that they were right and we really are out to get them!
But "reset" is over. Let's make sure we "overcharge" Russia for this aggression.
So we need to expand NATO without trying to take into account Russia's objections. And we need to organize NATO for defense. Again, without letting Russia have a veto. It's NATO--not NYETO.
Let's quietly move forward with security responses to Russia's seizure of Crimea--even as we refuse to ratify the capture and even as we continue to try to reverse the conquest at the sub-military level.
Even if we don't want to promote a military counter-offensive by Ukraine to retake Crimea, we really should prioritize Ukraine's military redeployment to face the Russians--including troop bases just north of Crimea to compel Russia to pay more to defending the entire peninsula.
