Compare and Contrast

We're a funny country.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine doesn't seem to count as use of force because Putin's troops fanning out across Crimea haven't had to fire a weapon:

President Vladimir Putin delivered a robust defense of Russia's actions in Crimea and said on Tuesday that he would use force in Ukraine only as a last resort, easing market fears that East-West tension over the former Soviet republic could lead to war.

Last resort! That's rich.

And yes, that's a picture that goes with the story.

Yet we consider a little boy who points his finger to be a threat:

The suspension last week of an Ohio fifth-grader who formed his hand into the shape of a gun and pointed his finger “execution-style” at a classmate is fueling the debate over whether school administrators under pressure to keep schools safe are punishing students excessively for imaginative play.

Zero-tolerance for a fifth grader. Unlimited tolerance for Putin.
