I don't get worked up over judicial nominations, though I know it is important. And even if it was important to me, I don't like to intrude on domestic politics except when there is a very specific foreign policy reason to do so. There is here, so bear with me.
Listening to comments by Leftists on Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court just astound me. Implicitly and sometimes even explicitly, they see a causal chain of events that starts with Alito taking his seat on the high court and ends with the reimposition of legal Segregation and the eviction of women from the workforce, public society, and politics.
Yet these same Leftists cannot see a causal chain of events that starts with Saddam's proven possession and use of chemical weapons and ballistic missiles (along with programs for nukes and bio weapons that at times were surprisingly advanced) and ends with Saddam having, brandishing, and using nukes, bugs, and chemical weapons after Saddam escaped the crumbling sanctions regime.
Instead, these same Leftists pretend that Saddam's threat was invented in January 2001 by a cabal of Neo-Cons rather than reflecting the consensus view going back to the 1990s.
Yep, Alito leads inevitably to 1955 America or worse; but there was no way to predict what Saddam might have done if left unfettered and in power.
Reality-based community, indeed.
