It's All About the Hope Now

Secretary of State Clinton "hopes" Russia will accept our truncated Europe-based anti-missile defenses:

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed hope Saturday that Russia would drop its opposition to a U.S. missile defense system in Europe and accept an offer to cooperate in developing technologies for shooting down hostile weapons. ...

Repeating a theme the Russians consistently have rejected, Clinton said Moscow has nothing to fear from a NATO-endorsed missile defense system based in Europe because it will be aimed at Iran's missile arsenal. ...

[Polish foreign minister Radek] Sikorski said his country fully supports the project, which the Obama administration radically altered last year in a move that some critics interpreted as a conciliatory gesture to Russia and a slap at Poland.

It's nice to have hope, I guess.

Apparently, this means that the recent nuclear arms agreement we signed with Russia does indeed place obstacles in the way of building missile defenses in Eastern Europe, as it seemed. The Obama administration said it did not when they signed it. Russia said the agreement did indeed limit us. Oh, who to believe, I wondered.

Well, my suspicion is right. We're down to hope alone for defending against Iranian nuclear missiles when they get developed.

Oh, wait, maybe sanctions will stop the mullahs.

Have a nice day.
