Motes and Planks

The Russians risk losing dominance in their own Far East as their population dwindles and the Chinese gain economic leverage there.

Russia has a massive potential China problem yet Moscow focuses on little bits of land in Georgia while alienating America and NATO.

One day the Russians will notice their real problem, but what then?

If Russia begins losing control over the Far East to a resurgent China, the Kremlin will have to seek America's help. While Mr Putin's driving purpose is to show that Russia has the strength to stand alone, in the end America may be an indispensable ally to contain a rising China. Those steadily emptying forests in the Far East explain why.

That's about the size of it. I'm sure we'll be more than happy to help Russia, right? There are glimmers of hope in Russian thinking, but so far nothing has seeped in deep enough to affect their bizarre theories of being under virtual assault by the West.

The Russians are just effing idiots. I don't know how to put it more kindly.
