Collateral Damage

I mentioned an article about a poll of Afghans that was headlined as indicating problems, but which seemed to show real progress.

Strategypage notes another interesting tidbit:

Despite the Afghan hostility to foreign troops, 62 percent favored the presence of American troops, and 54 percent favored the presence of other NATO troops.

That is interesting, given that our troops are the ones doing the fighting--and if you believe enemy propaganda are the ones killing civilians with indiscriminate use of firepower--while the NATO troops are the ones who largely do nothing (the British are the only large contingent of infantry who fight and the Canadians have pulled their weight, too, in this regard).

So why the higher favorability of US troops? Perhaps because we fight the Taliban who most Afghans agree are the greatest threat, with popularity numbers slightly below that of unmarked mine fields; and the NATO forces largely do not fight.
