It Was Pretty Cool

I went to the Winter Classic today.

It was fun. Actually, I went with my sister. Wearing a Red Wings jersey that I actually bought in Toronto some years ago while on vacation.

I also went to the Michigan-Michigan State game in 2010 at the stadium, mentioned in the article. That time with my son. That outcome at least was better (Michigan won easily).

Detroit played better today. But we still lost. In the shootout. I hate shootouts.

And what was with blowing the horn at 2:30 in the OT period just as one of our players was on a breakaway rushing for their goal all alone? Argghhhh!!! Really? We needed to switch sides of the ice during a 5-minute OT period? That could have ended the game without needing a shootout! Seriously, I want answers.

I tried to buck up my sister's morale by noting that our awful shootout record this year was for indoor shootouts. So this was totally different.

Sadly, it was not. Our indoor record is actually better than our outdoor record now, but that isn't saying much.

The snow was a big problem. One, it was tough to find our seats. I was confused by thinking that seats 1 and 2 would be on the aisle rather than smack in the middle of the row. Live and learn.

Second, sometimes it looked like grade schoolers on ice. Not to be insulting and with full awareness that I can't skate, but the snow slowed things down and made it weird and awkward.

Every television timeout witnessed a team of skating snow shovelers sweep down the rink.

And at 13 degrees at one point, we were grateful not to lose digits. Although my sister's hair actually froze. She had to spend time at a restaurant picking ice out of it. We were both actually reasonably warm--but we did not linger after the game to salute the men's hockey team for the Winter Olympics. Sorry guys.

So we had dinner to wait for traffic to die down so she could hit the road. I could walk home, of course. Amusingly enough (and dangerously enough), I had to make sure the bartender knew that I was there with my sister since he remembered me from the last time I was there, and asked if the date I was with then was coming back soon to the table. I might want to go there again with her and that would be an awkward conversation if the bartender had things wrong. Sister. Really.

Anyway. It was fun. I don't get a lot of chances to hang out with my sister. Outside of holidays! So that was pretty cool.
