A European Spring, Anyone?

As the Arab Spring witnessed Arabs longing for (if not knowing how to get there) and democratic alternative to the traditional choice of autocracy or mullah rule, it is funny that Europeans have pretty much the same choice.

Europeans still have democracy. But they may soon join their Arab brothers (and sisters) in hoping for an alternative to rule by Islamist fanatics or military-backed autocrats.

Rising Moslem populations in western Europe pose a threat of Islamist enclaves where non-assimilating Moslems pine for the day when they can resume their advance temporarily checked at Tours.

Meanwhile, the fanboys of the Brussels-based Eurocrats pine for the day when democracy won't get in the way of their Union of European Socialist Republics:

[Britain's House of Lords] Peers have been accused of showing “contempt” for British voters over the proposed EU referendum, saying the public cannot be trusted to make the right decision. Dozens of members of the House of Lords today attacked Conservative plans to set in law an in/out vote on Britain’s membership of the European Union by 2017.

Lord Mandelson, the former EU Commissioner [and one of the presiding geniuses of the Blair regime] said any vote would be a “lottery” in which the electorate would be swayed by irrelevant issues. “We should be very wary of putting our membership in the hands of a lottery in which we have no idea what factors, completely unrelated to Europe, will affect the outcome…”

What a giveaway! Perhaps we'll yet see the violence inherent in the European Union system.

At least the Peers aren't suggesting that coconuts are migratory.
