Egypt faces the prospect of a tiny new militant Islamic state on its border, which it sees as a threat to its own security. If Hamas succeeds in maintaining rule in the Gaza Strip, it could embolden Egypt's own Islamic opposition, the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
Even worse, further unrest among Gaza's 1.4 million people could spill into Egypt. The border with Gaza is riddled with tunnels used to smuggle weapons and explosives — and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has already seen three terror attacks on tourist resorts the past three years.
Jordanian leaders worry that the Fatah-Hamas conflict could spread to the West Bank and spark violence in neighboring Jordan, where half the people are Palestinians.
Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia also fear Gaza could become a power center for their regional rival, Iran, which has funneled millions of dollars to Hamas.
The three nations are insisting the emergency government set up by Abbas is the sole legitimate Palestinian authority. Underlining that stand, Egypt on Tuesday moved its embassy to the Palestinian Authority from Gaza to the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Funny how supporting the right of Palestinians at the expense of Israel for forty years has won the Sunni Arab states so little good will from Hamas. Hamas is a threat to Israel. And to Sunni Arab states, too. Forty years of support for the Palestinians and near-universal opposition to Israel counted for nothing in the end for Hamas.
Europeans who think their vocal support of Palestinians will win them any credit with the jihadis should take note. If Palestinians who belong to Fatah are no better than Jews, and Sunni Arabs in other countries are no better than Jews, what hope do you Infidel non-Arab guys in Europe have of avoiding that tag one day?
Yes indeed, why do the Islamo-fascists hate us? Our Left always tells us it is because we've failed to support the Palestinians sufficiently. Apparently not.
