Democracy in Action

For those here who cherish stability abroad (but not stability here, of course, as those "regime change starts at home" bumper stickers attest) this event will undoubtedly be yet another setback in Iraq:

Parliament voted Monday in a closed session to remove the speaker after a series of scandals involving the controversial lawmaker, legislators said. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani will be replaced by another Sunni Arab, they said.

Me? I am heartened to see leaders replaced by voting. Al-Mashhadani was not shot nor was he imprisoned. He was simply voted out of his office.

A little more of this in the region would make us all a lot safer, I should think.
