"The United States is considered by the Chinese Communist Party as the largest enemy, the major strategic rival," Mr. Chen [Yonglin] told The Washington Times in a telephone interview from Australia, where he is in hiding after breaking with Beijing in May.
All Chinese government officials are ordered to gather information about the United States, "no matter how trivial," he said. "The United States occupies a unique place in China's diplomacy," Mr. Chen said.
This isn't too surprising. And it isn't just that we are the most powerful nation on the planet so naturally they would see us as a potential enemy. India doesn't. Japan doesn't. Britain doesn't. I'm not sure what the heck the Russians are thinking. And in my generous moods, I don't even think the French think of us as an enemy. We are friends or competitors as worst for these countries. With some silly resentment thrown in for a couple of them.
But China does think of us as an enemy. Why? Because they are evolving into a fascist state and see us as a natural enemy--we who have slain militarists, fascists, and communists in turn during the last century.
We were much stronger economically than either Japan or Germany in 1941 yet they still were a tough challenge. Don't underestimate Chinese ability to harm us even if our economy is still much larger. We are the middle kingdom of Earth and China doesn't like that one bit.
