The Italian Exception

So why has Italy largely been spared Islamist terrorism despite the location of the Vatican within Italy's borders?

Is it the mafia keeping the jihadis out?

Is it long experience fighting the mafia (and communist terrorists during the Cold War) applied to jihadis?

Is it a different type of Moslem in Italy than in other European countries experiencing terror and crime?

Is it because Italy is considered a logistics rear area by the jihadis and so they choose not to draw unwanted attention to their Italian operators?

Good questions. I have no idea.
