My guess is that after India shot down the purchase of Boeing F-16s or F-18s in their recent fighter competition, Taiwan has a much better shot at getting their F-16 purchase request approved soon in Washington.
We do have an election coming up, and factory jobs for Boeing might be a nice thing for the president to have in hand before fall 2012.
UPDATE: Oh, I meant to mention that the 1992 sale of F-16s to Taiwan had just a hint of re-election politics in it.
