Damned If We Do?

We've been caught!

American and Afghan officials are locked in increasingly acrimonious secret talks about a long-term security agreement which is likely to see US troops, spies and air power based in the troubled country for decades.

Perhaps it is my imagination, but the story seems to be one of suspicion: "Look at what those sneaky Americans are up to!" and not a simple story of how we will cope with preserving future success in Afghanistan. But perhaps I'm just reacting to it being a Guardian article.

But unless I'm reading too much anti-Americanism into this, just remember that we stand accused of enabling current fighting by walking away from Afghanistan after our aid helped Afghans resist the Soviet Union's invasion during the 1980s.
