Tanks for the Memories

The Army wants to close its only tank plant for three years to save money.

I understand that we have enough for now. But the Army may over-estimate how much money would be saved. And the Army may under-estimate the problem of reforming the skilled workforce to man the plant in three years.

And more important, I have little faith that once closed that the plant will reopen. At some point the defense industrial base has to be retained even if it costs money to keep it on life support.

We keep telling ourselves that nobody will challenge us in conventional warfare. What if an enemy doesn't agree with our comforting notion?
