Kiss of Death?

The Syrian regime under the Assads has been in place for so long that it seems permanent. But a former vice president who fled Syria a few months ago is calling for the overthrow of the Assad government:

A former vice president of Syria called from exile for the overthrow of the regime he served for decades, saying Friday that "a shameless mafia" is running the country and that its president surrounds himself with sycophantic advisers and is unfit to rule.

He thinks people power might have a role, but it isn't clear to me that the Damascus fellows won't just send in the tanks rather than break and run.

Still, when someone of his former high rank and responsibilities breaks with the ruling elite, is it indicative of a general unrest?
