Good Enough for Government Work

Is Syria next to go? Recent unrest has opened the possibility.

While I think that our interests in the Middle East and Afghanistan would benefit immensely with the overthrow of the mullah regime in Iran, have no doubt that Iran's loss of their Arab hand puppet as the mullahs' entry point to screw around in the Arab world would be a great advance for peace (from the first link):

The demise of this murderous clan is in America’s interest. The Assad regime made Syria the pathway for jihadists from around the world to enter Iraq to fight and kill Americans. Long a haven for terrorists, Syria still allows the Hamas leadership, among other Palestinian terrorist groups, to live and work in Damascus. Moreover, a government dominated by Syria’s Sunni majority — the Assad clan is from the tiny Alawite minority — would never have the close relations with Hezbollah and Iran that Assad maintains; it would seek to reintegrate into the Arab world. Iran will lose its close Arab ally, and its land bridge to Hezbollah, when Assad falls.

At some point, the Arab wave of freedom protesters will peter out. Let's hope that the wave washes away the Assad regime before it calms. Syrians would benefit. Lebanese would benefit. Iraqis would benefit. Israelis would benefit. And Jordanians would benefit. We would benefit, too, of course.

If we can help this out, it would clearly be good enough for government work. Let's at least make sure that the Syrians out on the streets facing bullets, batons, and arrest know that they are not forgotten by the West.
