We already know the dehumanizing impact of a soldier marrying a reporter who works for New Republic. It leads them to act like a complete jerk and blame their conduct on the effects of a war that has not yet been experienced.
So perhaps you'd care to read accounts of our military personnel who have experienced war and demonstrated courage and character in battle (tip to National Review). These are the men and women in uniform who represent the best our our country while they defend us.
Some people are jerks. Some are heroes. War exposes both, I guess.
