Insensitve Louts

Remember how the experts in the West said we needed to halt offensive operations in Afghanistan during 2001 Ramadan to show our sensitivity to Islam? Remember how those who opposed the war said that continuing to fight contrary to Islam would inflame the Moslem world? I do. Never mind that in the Arab World the 1973 Arab-Israeli War is the Ramadan War. You have to hand it to the anti-war side--they'll seize on anything if it hinders the war effort.

Well this article has a nice reminder that this belief of the anti-war side (back before Afghanistan was the good war and Iraq the bad war) remains hogwash:

In Baghdad, a suicide attacker set off a car bomb at the main entrance to the heavily fortified Green Zone, a district of Iraqi government buildings and the U.S. and British Embassies. The powerful blast killed two policemen.

The attack came on the first day of Ramadan, the holy Islamic month of fasting. Al-Qaida in Iraq called on its followers to step up attacks against U.S. and Iraqi forces and make it a "month of victory for Muslims and a month of defeat for the hypocrites and polytheists."

Previous Ramadans since the invasion and occupation of Iraq two years ago saw a spike in violence in Iraq — especially suicide attacks, in part because some Islamic extremists believe those who die in combat for a holy cause during the period are especially blessed.

On the other hand, I guess you could argue that the jihadis are showing little respect for Islam by their actions generally so why should this be any different?

It's always so sad when the enemy refuses to go by the talking points of the Western anti-war side. Hypocrites and polytheists, indeed.

In any case, if the enemy manages a Ramadan surge, I hope we bless lots and lots of the thugs. Sometimes I'm downright culturally sensitive!
