Oh, For Pete's Sake

Sometimes stuff on the web is just ridiculous. We did not send troops to prop up the Mursi government last month.

Do people who write this stuff know that they are providing junk information? Our press corps is certainly biased to the left, but that is no excuse for shoddy essays. Lord knows I'm no fan of our president, but this is just ridiculous:

According to reports, the commander-in-chief is deploying a riot-control unit from Fort Hood to Egypt to help the Islamofascist regime there repel its own citizens protesting increasing human-rights violations.

More than 400 Army soldiers from the Texas base will soon man posts throughout Egypt as part of a nine-month "peacekeeping mission." They've been trained to respond to threats, including protests and riots.

"Soldiers encountered Molotov cocktails and other dangerous items in the training," according to the local TV news station that broke the story out of Killeen, Texas.

Are you kidding me? You really think we'd send 400 troops to a country of over 80 million for riot control duty in service of the Mursi government? Given that Mursi was just ousted in a coup, it is now ridiculous.

But it was a ridiculous suggestion before. Two things tipped me off--the "peacekeeping mission" aspect and some historical knowledge.

I figured that the unit from Texas was going to support the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai Peninsula set up after the Camp David Accords to separate Israeli and Egyptian troops and reassure Israel that Egypt didn't mass troops in the Sinai, which would pose an invasion threat to Israel.

So what about that Texas Unit? Here's the Fort Hood press release:

The 1st Cavalry Division announced today a battalion task force from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team will deploy to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula this summer as part of the Multinational Force and Observers peacekeeping force.

The 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, will observe and report violations of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty during its nine-month deployment. The 400-plus Soldier U.S. battalion will be based on the southern end of the Sinai Peninsula, near Sharm-el-Sheikh. The U.S. Soldiers will man observation posts and check points along the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula between Eilat, Israel and Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt.

What do you know? In the middle of the frickin' desert and nowhere near Egyptian cities.

And nothing to do with supporting Mursi.

Given that Islamists have roamed the Sinai more lately, I'm happy the unit is trained to deal with demonstrations that might target them.

Are the president's actual policies not problematic enough for you? Do you really have to make up fantasy plots and threats?  Friggin' idiots.
