The European Union (EU) seeks power for itself and any purported goal is a mere means to the real objective of power by stripping away the annoying prefix of their proto-imperial empire.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will begin in early September to select candidates for commissioners, including for an anticipated new dedicated defence position. The incumbent will face the Herculean task of reforming the continent’s still ineffective defence spending and underperforming defence-industrial base. How much power and financial clout the post-holder will have, or will hope to acquire, will help determine the extent of their success or failure over their five-year tenure.
Besides establishing a defence commissioner, von der Leyen’s goals for the 2024–2029 commission also include creating a European Defence Union to ‘support and coordinate efforts to strengthen the defence industry’.
Give the commissioners more power? Why? To succeed rather than fail!
Succeed or fail at what, you may ask. At creating a body to strengthen the defense industry!
Remember, the steps are 1) Increase commissioner powers, 2) Create a EU body with power. And then, 3) Strengthen the defense industry!
Have no doubt, if the EU gets the first two they will happily declare victory:
Remember, the EU doesn't care about solving any particular problem. The EU just wants the authority to address the problem, as I noted before Russia invaded Ukraine (again). Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Empire[.]
Russia isn't the only threat seeking to build an empire in Europe.
