Resolved or Paused?

France stepped up and halted the sale of amphibious warfare ships to Russia (useful to invade Ukraine, Georgia, and the Baltic NATO states):

Russia will be "fully reimbursed" for the two warships, the Elysée Palace said in a statement.

The Kremlin said compensation had already been received and that it now considered the matter "resolved".

But call me cynical, but if France sells the ships to someone else (as they say they will do), I really hope that the deal includes language that prevents the ships from being sold to Russia anywhere downstream of the original sale.

After all, ultimate resale to Russia wouldn't conflict with President Obama's request:

US President Barack Obama urged Paris in June to "press the pause button" on the warship deal with Russia.

We'll see. If I was a betting man, I'd put money on those ships flying the Russian flag before the end of this decade.
