Egypt's state television is reporting that the vice president has said President Hosni Mubarak's son will not seek to succeed his father in elections later this year, the latest concession to anti-government protesters.
Another concession by the government. Will it be enough to satisfy enough protesters to vacate the streets?
And is the government sincere (based on fear and self-preservation, mind you--I'm not looking for born again democrats) in holding a free election in September or will they try to bend the process enough to engineer a new boss the same as the old boss?
That's where we have to come in, of course. We have to keep the pressure on Egypt to set up a mechanism that puts democracy in place and not just a one-time vote for who the next dictator is. As I've mentioned before, that situation is not democracy.
