I Think I've Identified the Problem

When the littoral combat ship is being called our Navy's "pirate catcher," I think I've identified the problem with our failure to stop pirate attacks off Somalia.

You see, pirates are often just armed thugs on a small ship. Usually they're on a small speed boat:

Clearly, any lightly armed coast guard vessel of virtually any country could kill pirates bobbing about on such impressively vulnerable boats. You do not need a massively expensive ship such as the LCS bearing down on pirates to have a shot at nailing them:

We don't need specific ships to catch pirates (who we'll release anyway), we need to decide to kill pirates on sight.

My prediction is that our newest pirate catching ship will do as well in the pirate battling business as our current ships, if the rules aren't changed.
