Pining for the Euro Caliphate

While Finland's (if I may be excused for lumping an entire country's opinions into one) skepticism of European Union bailouts of insolvent member states is surely appropriate (tip to Mad Minerva), the reasons for supporting the EU crack me up:

I was raised to know that genocidal war must never again be visited on our continent and I came to understand the values and principles that originally motivated the establishment of what became the European Union. This Europe, this vision, was one that offered the people of Finland and all of Europe the gift of peace founded on democracy, freedom and justice. This is a Europe worth having, so it is with great distress that I see this project being put in jeopardy by a political elite who would sacrifice the interests of Europe's ordinary people in order to protect certain corporate interests.

A Europe of democracy, freedom, and justice does sound nice. Sadly, that isn't what they are building. You see, not very deep down, the Euro political elites believe that Europe's history of genocidal war and war generally is to be blamed on the bloody peasants of Europe--not the political elites who waged war. And when the bloody peasants are to blame, you can't have them mucking up the vision of the political elites of a Europe without war and strife by letting them vote and determine their policies or and speak freely.

The European Union is nothing but a Soviet Union Lite that will regulate away freedom in Gucci loafers rather than jackboots. Or a secular caliphate, if you will. The sooner this Frankenempire dies, the better for all of us.
