China for Just a Day?

Speaking of Friedman, Jonah also writes, regarding Friedman's China man crush:

Tom Friedman thinks we could have optimal policies in the United States if we could just be China for a day. Meanwhile, China is China like, well, everyday and it has an archipelago of "cancer villages" all over the country. Something doesn't compute (and I think it's Tom Friedman).
Perhaps we've been selling Tom short on his brain power for saying all would be well if we could be China for a day. Maybe this is a universal rule that he has developed and not limited to just America.

Imagine how much better China could be if they were China for but one day per year?
