Place Your Bets

I don't know why even Americans are so eager to hand off the number one position to China, even as China has a long way to go to even match our GDP or military power.

We have more strengths than weaknesses, and China has weaknesses that their strength tends to obscure.

Besides, we've heard this story before haven't we? Yet still we stand at the top. And it might not be wise to bet against us:

As we enter the next few decades of the new millennium, I would bet on a more youthful, still resource-rich and democratic America to maintain its preeminence even in a world where economic power continues to shift from its historic home in Europe to Asia.

Still, when you are dealing with a prickly China and an America famous for taking any abuse the world dishes out without responding, who would you publicly predict would emerge as number one?

I'm sure that when this settles down, all those people praising China will tell us they were with us all along.
