Before Bush Derangement Syndrome

Plenty on our Left still insist that Bush tricked the American people into invading Iraq by convincing the American people that Saddam was tied to the 9/11 attackers. The hard-core among them still have wet dreams of impeachment dancing in their heads over this and other imagined crimes.

In a trip down memory lane, the New York Times in May 2003 had not yet reached that stage of BDS, with David Sanger writing:

The Bush administration has never linked the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to Mr. Hussein, although senior officials did charge that Iraq had ties to the Qaeda network.

The ties were there, sure enough, though the extent is highly uncertain. But even our media understood that Bush never tied Saddam to 9/11. Now our media, opposing the Iraq War, insists that Bush misled the country into that war.

Ah, for the days when political disagreement was not raised to the level of a crime.
