Beware the Company You Keep

The Germans claim they are refocusing their military on the novel concept of "national security."

But some Germans wonder if spending more money on their military will be a waste if Germany won't use it:

As a legacy of World War II, Germany has restrictive guidelines for its military activity, leading some to question whether spending 2 percent of GDP would make sense, given the limitations on what kind of missions the Bundeswehr can participate in.

And you wonder why it worries me that the Dutch, Romanians, and Czechs are assigning brigades to the German army?

Will German "limitations" infect the armies of NATO states that place brigades under German command?

And honest to God, Germany's excuses for not spending on defense are tiresome. If after all this time as a free democracy the Germans seriously believe that if they own too many tanks they'll be tempted to revive their "legacy" to conquer Europe and set up concentration camps, maybe NATO just needs to pull back and nuke Germany from orbit.
