The Limits of Understanding

If I'm supposed to "understand" Russia's need for a buffer zone in the west (and so excuse aggression against Ukraine), why isn't it understandable that NATO would want a buffer in Ukraine against a Russian threat from the east over that same flat terrain?

I know, I know. It's probably some nuanced logic that is beyond my caveman comprehension.
