U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Russia's foreign minister in Geneva about a ceasefire deal for Syria, the State Department said on Thursday in a sudden about-face after saying it did not believe a meeting was worthwhile.
Less than an hour after the U.S. State Department said it had no travel to announce for Kerry, spokesman John Kirby announced that the top U.S. diplomat would meet his counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, on Friday. The Russian minister arrived in the Swiss city earlier on Thursday.
Wow! You can barely see the string vibrate as Lavrov jerks Kerry into play!
Clearly Russia wants to deploy Spongespine Spandexpants at least one more time.
UPDATE: Oh Lord:
The United States and Russia early Saturday announced a breakthrough agreement on Syria that foresees a nationwide cease-fire starting next Monday, followed a week later by an unlikely new military partnership between the rival governments targeting the Islamic State and al-Qaida.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said shortly after midnight that the plan could reduce violence in Syria and lead to a long-sought political transition, ending more than five years of bloodshed.
God help us all, but I think Kerry truly believes he did something good. That the Russians want. Who want Assad to survive the war.
And I'll bet Lavrov got Kerry's lunch money, too.
Seriously, how likely is it that Kerry outmaneuvered Lavrov?
To be fair, Assad winning and crushing all his opponents would reduce violence in Syria after the crushing.
It's a wonder any rebels at all are willing to work with us.
