Don't You Know There's a War On?

Yes (via Instapundit), we are at war. Notwithstanding Professor Juan Cole's (He Speaks Arabic, You Know!) tired analysis to the contrary.

No, it is not our fault at all (again, via Instapundit). Leo notes:

The denial of the peril facing America remains a staple of the left. We still hear that the terrorism is a scattered and minor threat that should be dealt with as a criminal justice matter. In Britain last October, the BBC, a perennial leader in foolish leftism, delivered a three-part TV series arguing that terrorism is vastly exaggerated. Al Qaeda barely exists at all, the series argued, except as an idea that uses religious violence to achieve its ends.

And God save us from the Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism.

We know what we're doing, so just call this "the War." In 1943, when someone asked, "don't you know there's a war on?" you didn't ask them to be more specific. You knew. So why be specific now when this war will go on for quite some time until we stomp the terrorists, end the regimes that sponsor terrorism, and make a stab at reforming the dysfunctional society that spawns terror recruits? We know what war is going on!

Heck, calling this the "War" not only is simpler but will actually address the only real question we need to answer--that this "unpleasantness" is in fact a war and not some criminal justice matter.

So there. I don't care what the official name is. I'm just going to call this the "war." I suggest you do so too and move on. We'd be better off fighting the war than debating semantics.

Don't you know there's a war on?
